Banking Commissioner Peter Hildreth ended his removal hearing on Thursday by agreeing to retire as of Jan. 1... Earlier in the day, he accepted blame for the way his office handled the massive Financial Resources Mortgage fraud scheme, but insisted he had removed himself from the case over ethical concerns.

While the Mortgage Specialists' vs. ML-Implode suit is not mentioned in this particular article, this illuminating article has background on Hildreth's questionable record regarding enforcement at Michael Gill's lending outfit. Regarding Commission investigation findings on MoSpec in 2002 that the company "didn't warrant the public's confidence", the article has this interesting tidbit:

Gill hired the law firm of Shaheen & Gordon to represent him in an appeal of the Banking Department complaint. Firm co-founder William Shaheen is the husband of then-governor and current U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, who appointed Hildreth as banking commissioner in 2001.

Connections between Gill and Hildreth, perhaps? That would explain a lot, for sure.
