"Hoover (or his communications staff ) invented "Depression" as a euphemism for Panic because the banking collapses of ‘07, ‘73, etc. had traumatized the population so profoundly they needed to be told a softer word. But the new word, even after 80 years, evokes such a gut-wrenching surge of terror we clearly needed to find a yet softer expression."
